Sulton Akbariy

A modest man and a talented poet, Sulton Akbariy was one of those poets in our literature who wrote in a bardic (bakhshi) style. He also worked effectively as a skilled epic writer and translator. Consequently, he is among those poets who possess their own voice and style.

There are quite a few poets in our literature who wrote in the bakhshi style. Sulton Akbariy is one of them. Sulton Akbariy was born in Tashkent in the late autumn of 1923. Immediately after finishing high school, he began his career as a literary staff member at newspapers. He left for the front from his final year at the Tashkent State Pedagogical Institute. Upon returning from the war, he continued to work as a journalist.

While working as a department head at the newspaper «Xorazm haqiqati», he published a series of sketches titled «Letters from the Desert» about the construction of the Kungirot railway. He returned to Tashkent in 1948 and worked in newspapers until 1952, after which he studied at the Higher Literary Courses in Moscow.

Later, he held responsible positions in the editorial offices of newspapers and magazines such as the «Tashkent» Fiction Publishing House as editor-in-chief, as well as «Toshkent haqiqati», «Guliston», and «O‘qituvchilar gazetasi».

The modest man and talented poet Sulton Akbariy passed away in the spring of 1997.

Sulton Akbariy's first collection of poetry was published in 1950. Since then, nearly twenty of his poetry collections and epic poems have been published.

Career

Nearly twenty of Sulton's poetry collections and epic poems were published. Among them, collections such as «Imonim, e’tiqodim», «Yaralangan qo‘shiqlar», «Suluv suluv emas, suygan suluv», «Shukrona», «Mehrigiyo», and «Dovon va devon» stand out in particular.

Sulton Akbariy also created many works as a skilled epic writer. Among them, the epic «Girdob» (1964) earned the attention of readers and the literary community. In his epic «Qatag‘on» (1992), the inhumane essence of the Soviet state's horrific policy was exposed.

Sulton Akbariy also worked effectively as a translator. Among the works he translated, his translations of the Kyrgyz epic «Manas» occupy a certain place.
